The Big Island

Hi Zach, hope all is going well with school. It must be winding down by now and you are probably getting ready to spend your first summer in your new home. Hope you have made lots of new friends back there. I know there are lots of folks out here that miss you dearly. I am sure you are very popular with everyone given your outgoing nature.

Your Uncle Gregg & Auntie Kim treated me, your Auntie Teen, Michael Bare's mom, Lisa and two other friends to a week at his home on the Big Island. The weather was awesome and it was nice to get away and spend a whole week just relaxing and reading on the beach and swimming in the ocean. We grilled a lot of fish on the BBQ and had some great picnics on the beach. We watched quite a few sunsets, but not as many as normal since the volcano has been erupting and making things a bit hazy. It didn't stop the warmth and sunshine during the day so we did a lot of sightseeing as well. Saw lots of turtles and even swam with one. It reminded me so much of the year we all went to Oahu with Jessica and Courtney and you came running out of the water to whisper to us that you had seen one so that we could sneak back in and watch him without everyone crowding around. They are such magical creatures. I think of that laid back character in 'Finding Nemo' every time I see one. We also saw lots of stray cats (they help keep the mice out of the hotels). One named Scout, lives on the private beach and loves to have his back scratched with a house broom. He bakes in the sun on the sand and hangs out with the lifeguards. We saw a couple of mongoose, lots of geckos and the little brown shaggy wild goats that live on the lava flows. They blend in very well so they are hard to spot. We got really close to some turtles basking in the twilight so I was able to get a good picture and posted it here along with one of those awesome sunsets we watched. Back to reality now as it is cold and rainy here in California.

Well, I had better sign off as I have gone on quite a bit. I love Hawaii so much as I know you do too. The water is so refreshing and the flowers smell so sweet. It's just paradise. Very hard to come home, but I missed Cody, Jeff and the kitties too. Hope you are having a great sophomore year in high school. As always, I think of you every day and dream of you at night. Please write or call when you can Zach.

Love,
Mom
